How to be your authentic self

Updated: Aug 21, 2022

True success comes when you take the time to really know yourself.

Being authentic means coming from a real place within. It's when our actions and words are in harmony with our beliefs and values. it is being ourselves, not an imitation of what we think we should be or have been told we should be.

As a Life Purpose Coach, I encourage you to build the “real you”. Your reputation will last a long time and it needs to be treated with respect.

Authenticity is about presence, living in the moment with conviction and confidence and staying true to yourself. Your personal brand is about figuring out who you really are, what you do best and then live that brand. This is the real essence of authenticity.

Here are five ways to find your authentic self:

1. Always be true to yourself.

Know your values and never compromise them, even if doing so might lead to short-term gain. Integrity and authenticity go hand in hand.

2. Be good to yourself.

We all have to take care of ourselves. Always strive to do things that enrich your mind, body and soul. Learn a new language, discover some new music, start a new business venture, bake cupcakes, go for a walk.

Find things that nurture your soul and make you feel good about yourself. This will deepen your sense of self and boost your self-confidence.

3. Have fun!

Life is often too short and hard. Maintaining a sense of humour and having fun help us all get through. Having fun also happens to be an amazing productivity tool. Always engage with having fun.

4. Don’t hide your so-called flaws.

No one is perfect and no one is expected to be perfect.

Being authentic means showing the real you, whatever that means for you. You may be cranky, pessimistic and even antisocial sometimes, as well as a little different. Understand yourself, talents, ‘flaws’ and bring it all to the table.

5. Know what you want.

Career paths can often be impossible to predict. However, if you know who you are and what you want, you’ll save a lot of time and energy. To the greatest extent possible, only go after opportunities that ignite your passion and stir you soul.
