What is Fulfillment in life?

Updated: Aug 21, 2022

Feeling fulfilled is a feeling of happiness and satisfaction about the life you are in. It’s the way you feel when your abilities and talents are being used, are balanced and when working together, they fill you up with happiness and satisfaction.

Take a moment to think about your own life - what is your vision of a really fulfilling life? What would that be like for you? Who and what would be around you, in your fulfilling life?

Savour that thought. Savour the people around you and your surroundings. Savour how a life fulfilled makes you feel.

The concept of fulfilment is intensely personal and how we reach a deep understanding of self-fulfilment is a unique process that for some take a lifetime to realise. It is also fair to say that our concept of fulfillment constantly evolves, as we grow, develop and learn more about ourselves and our surroundings.

When planning to create a fulfilling life, many people typically start by reviewing what they have, what they don’t have and then focus on the gaps. The general route taken to achieving fulfillment, is to work out a plan to do ‘something’ to fill in the gaps – typically securing a higher paying job, going on a luxury holiday, buying a second home or even building a successful business. In fact, these things do have a place in a fulfilled life, as expressions of fulfillment rather than fulfillment itself.

All of these achievements often provide momentary satisfaction that will fade over time. Can you think of a time when you acquired something that you really wanted, only to find that the sense of satisfaction started to fade soon after? A fulfilling life is not created through accomplishment or creation, rather it is a continuous process. Often, fulfillment is described as something that fills and nourishes your heart and soul.

Many of my clients, turn up to my coaching programmes aware of something that is under the surface of their everyday lives that keeps “turning up”, calling them, as if they are meant to do something else, rather than seeking fulfillment from the start. For other clients, they have tried to “reach” fulfillment” by trying to fill the gaps in their lives, may even have achieved many amazing things, and yet, they still feel that something is missing from their lives.

A fulfilling life is a life of meaning, purpose and satisfaction. A fulfilling life is a valued life that is defined by you and in accordance with what you value. Identifying and understanding what you value in life is, ultimately informs all decisions you make in life, ensuring that you nurture and stay true to what are your core life values.

At its deepest level, fulfillment is exploring and developing a life with purpose and service. It sounds simple enough and is easy for me to write. It takes courage to really choose and keep on choosing to live a life of fulfillment. The world we live in is designed to push us into boxes, to be labelled. Sometimes, those boxes or labels may even feel comfortable and safe, making it uncomfortable or unnatural to live a life of fulfillment. Equally, work pressures and deadlines are generally designed to achieve short-term results leaving little time for exploration on something so vast as “how does this contribute to my fulfilling life?”. That said, honouring our values and living a life as close to fulfillment as possible, will provide a strong sense of satisfaction and contentment.

Creating a life of fulfillment will almost certainly create ripples across your life, of those around you and of the world you reside in. And yet, when you are truly connected with your sense of fulfillment, the action you take can only be transformational.

Identifying and establishing a life purpose is one way of capturing the essence of living a life intentionally, making choices that increase the value within your life and that of others. Living a life that follows a purpose-directed path is one way to achieving fulfillment.

If you have decided that 2021 is the year that includes your first or renewed steps towards fulfillment in your life and / or have been trying to ‘fill the gaps’ as a way of ‘reaching’ fulfillment, then working together will make this year the most transformational for you, yet.
